What is a Cursillo Commissioning?

Last Saturday (13th) I was at the Cursillo Commissioning, when I told my son, he asked "what's a Cursillo?"

"I know," he joked: "you bought a boat called 'Cursillo', and you are having the launching & naming party."

Cursillo (pronounced kur-SEE-yo) is a Spanish word meaning "short course"; it's intended for Christians to strengthen and develop their ability to play a leadership role in the Christian Church.

As Christians, we try to follow the example of Jesus Christ, and out of love for Him we want to serve Him better. Cursillo is a way to help achieve that.

The Cursillo method has three major components: The first components is the Weekend; I went on a Cursillo Weekend 2 years ago and it was a very happy time and memorable occasion. So now it is time for me to help with a weekend for new first time participants, and that is where the Commissioning comes in.

To serve the Church in a recognised function, you have to be commissioned by the Church. It is for volunteers, but there is structure and order.

Cursillo in Calgary is officially under the Anglican Diocese of Calgary, but participants come from other denominations.

Cursillo hold separate weekends for men and for women twice a year, in the Fall and in the Spring.

"The Calgary Cursillo Movement is one method of renewal in the church. Its purpose is to help those in the church understand their individual callings to be Christian leaders."

  1. Gurth,

It's great to read about this wonderful ministry. Thanks for posting it. I laughed about your son's comments :). I think any Christian who can be sponsored should try to attend. www.cursillo.ab.ca is a good place to start.
